On November 6, Yi Je-seok went to number 1 Chemin de Plonjon, a dead end on the left bank in Geneva. After three attempts, he managed to attach a poster to the large iron door at the entrance. It is a photomontage that shows Kim Jung-un, the North Korean leader, behind bars in an orange prison outfit on which we can read: “Arrest one. Save millions. Yi Je-seok takes some photos and a collaborator films the scene. “I made eye contact with the guards inside, but could not speak to them. When a car came out, I was so scared that I ran away,” he said from Seoul.
The blow was not without danger. The address is that of the mission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, that is, North Korea, the last totalitarian regime. Renowned publicist Yi Je-seok is participating in a campaign to denounce the “crimes against humanity” of the leader of Pyongyang. “In the event of a direct confrontation with officials, there could have been a serious conflict,” he says. I am a successful artist, I am rich and famous, and I no longer have the temerity to put my life in danger. However, the operation does not stop there. The poster is then exhibited on the Place des Nations, opposite the UN Palace where the Universal Periodic Review of North Korea is to be held the next day within the framework of the Human Rights Council. This time, the police intervened and confiscated the poster on the grounds that this demonstration had not been announced. “I assume she was alerted by a North Korean agent.”
