‘Unforgettable from start to finish’: Frederik X of Denmark goes behind the scenes of his first day as king

A year after his accession to the throne, King Frederik X shared unique and personal moments of his accession, while looking back on a first year of reign marked by success and modernity.

This January 14, 2025 marks the first anniversary of the accession to the throne of Frederik X, which occurred after the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II, after 52 years of reign. For the occasion, the king published previously unseen photos taken during this historic day on the royal family’s Instagram account. We discover Frederik X behind the scenes of his preparation, putting on his uniform.

In a text written in the caption, the king revealed his emotions: “Serious. Concentration. And a smile on his face. Everything had to be done a year ago. At that same time, I was preparing for the proclamation. Taking over from my mother without having to say goodbye to her at the same time was, and continues to be, an immense privilege. January 14, 2024 was a day full of emotions and unforgettable from start to finish.”

A successful first year of reign

During this first year, Frederik X traveled the kingdom in a grand tour, stopping as far as Greenland to meet his subjects. Accompanied by his wife Mary, he was able to embody a harmonious transition after the long reign of his mother, while infusing a modern and accessible touch to the Danish monarchy.

The royal couple also experienced significant moments on a personal level, notably with their eldest son, Crown Prince Christian. The latter completed his studies, spent a term in East Africa, and recently joined the army. By assuming his first official responsibilities, notably as temporary regent, Christian actively prepared for his future role as king.
