While Donald Trump will officially take office on January 20, 2025, the future American president is multiplying mind-blowing declarations on the Panama Canal, Canada or Greenland, and now on the fires which are devastating part of Los Angeles, even blaming the homosexuality of the fire chief…
Is it his mental health that is derailing or the clear signs of thinking that is going in all directions, but which does not necessarily make sense?
The Panama Canal now belongs to Panama
Concerning the Panama Canal, Donald Trump, clearly aware of the question of the rights of this passage which connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, mentioned a solution as original as it is illegal in order to limit the financial burden for (maritime) traffic American: seize the Panama Canal.
Historical subject which should no longer be a topical issue in our society where law is supposed to take precedence: the Panama Canal was certainly property of the United States from its opening in 1914 until its return to the State of Panama in 1999, but the sovereignty of this gigantic work has been recognized for a quarter of a century in the State that this canal crosses, Panama.
Is Trump inspired by Putin’s behavior?
Is Trump influenced by the behavior of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin who imposes by force (and by war) what he wants to control or submit? The very idea of moving into a society where law would give way to the will of the most powerful is very worrying, and it strangely resembles the attempted coup d’état of 2021 when Trump tried to stay in power despite the result. American presidential elections.
The Canadian affair is very strange, because there is no precedent or conflict of territoriality between the United States and its northern neighbor, as large in surface area but eight times less populated. Trump now says that Canada would benefit from becoming the 51st state of the United States, except that no one in Canada asked for it… What fly (or mosquito) has Trump stung to raise such a question? Here too, the answer probably lies in those around him, and that says a lot about the subjects that concern him.
For Trump, Canada and Greenland are “American”
The question of Greenland, “the green land” which benefits from relative autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark, is equally worrying. With global warming, the exploitation of resources (mining and hydrocarbons) arouses desire, while Denmark and the Greenlandic community try to manage it with reason and above all by considering the environmental consequences on the largest island in the world covered by immense glaciers.
Greenland’s less than 60,000 inhabitants already host a very important American military installation, the Thule base (officially called Pituffik since 2023) which mainly hosts surveillance and space detection systems. Greenland had been the subject of purchase proposals from the United States, the first by President Truman in 1946 for strategic reasons. They were very poorly received, even if Denmark gave the United States every opportunity to install military bases and fly over its territory without restriction.
What is more worrying in the current situation is Donald Trump’s assertion that he would not renounce force to succeed in his plans. “Force” is not necessarily a military intervention in his mind (he is by nature very opposed to war which he equates to “bad business”) but can resort to other levers, economic retaliatory measures. or financial such that the country concerned would eventually give in.
Trump wants to impose all his solutions? By all means?
These examples, which may seem quite crazy in our current society, should not make us underestimate the dangerousness of Donald Trump and his circle – Elon Musk in the first place – who have no respect for the law since he serves their business, whether professional or private. Nor will they have any scruples in moving forward in this way, as often do people who talk all the time about values and greatness to justify the worst in the matter.
For Ukraine, a forceps solution…
The Trump team’s discussions with Putin’s circle regarding the war in Ukraine (and with Benjamin Netanyahu for his devastation of Gaza) are already well underway. These teams will stage their conclusions which they will present as a big step for (business) peace and they will impose them without worrying about the expectations of Ukrainians for their future, nor of Europeans for their security.
The Ukrainians, after three years of a bloody war, are increasingly convinced that they will have to accept (swallow?) territorial concessions to obtain a simple ceasefire from Putin.
In this context, we must be more vigilant and thoughtful than ever in the face of the harmful maneuvers of Donald Trump and his team, of which the Europeans are the least of concerns… Everything will now accelerate, Trump’s agenda has already been imposed, it is time to understand and explain it.
