Paul Kagame firmly denies any Rwandan support for the M23 and…

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has categorically rejected accusations against his country, accused of supporting the M23 rebel group active in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). At a press conference held in Kigali on Thursday, the leader vigorously denied any Rwandan involvement in the rebel activities.

Kagame made it clear that the leaders and the majority of M23 fighters come from Uganda, where they had found refuge. “These M23 leaders and the majority of their fighters are from Uganda. Even if they speak Kinyarwanda, that does not make them Rwandans,” he stressed. These statements come as Kinshasa maintains its accusations, despite a tense international context. A recent report from the United Nations Group of Experts points the finger at Kigali for alleged support for the M23. In response, Kagame insisted that these rebels are first and foremost Congolese. He also questioned the international community: “Why do we have more than 100,000 refugees from eastern Congo here in Rwanda? » The Rwandan president recalled that his country had disarmed the M23 fighters who took refuge in Rwanda in 2012-2013, by handing over their weapons to the Congolese authorities. He urged the DRC to move beyond accusations and address the root causes of the conflict. According to him, direct negotiation with the M23 remains the essential path to a peaceful resolution. At the same time, the mediation efforts of Angolan President João Lourenço between Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame seem to have stalled, the discussions having not led to a rapprochement.

This position taken by Kagame is part of a delicate international context, where each declaration can influence regional stability. The question remains open: will the path of dialogue finally be favored?
