With the new election of John Dramani Mahama, Ghana has just undergone its fourth political change at the top of the State. How can we explain that the country has managed to escape the spiral of coups that have marked its history?
Eight years after his departure from power and following two failed comeback attempts, John Dramani Mahama is back at the head of Ghana. He was sworn in alongside his vice-president, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first woman to hold this office in the country.
He won the December 2024 presidential election with 56.6% of the vote, after tapping into the country’s economic frustrations to win the election.
His victory is historic, since he is the first president of the fourth Republic of Ghana (since the return of multi-party democracy in 1992) to resume the presidency after being ousted by the polls.
