The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, expected at the White House on January 20 to succeed Joe Biden, raised the possibility of regaining control of the Panama Canal. During a speech Tuesday at Mar-a-Lago, he did not rule out the use of force. These comments come in a context where he castigates China’s growing influence on this strategic interoceanic route, while demanding a reduction in tolls for American ships.
Operated by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), an autonomous public entity, the canal represents 6% of Panama’s GDP.
