Por the new year, Bamako received some spicy wishes from its Algerian neighbor. On December 30, during the annual diplomatic assessment of the neighbor to the east, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf refused to describe the members of the Azawad Liberation Front as “terrorists”. In doing so, asserting that the military action was “notnot a solution”, he denigrates the Malian strategy, which mobilized its army and the Wagner militia against the Tuaregs.
The reaction of the junta did not take long to make itself known, and confirms the new level of tensions between the two neighbors, formerly strategic allies. In a press release published on 1is January, the head of Malian diplomacy “strongly condemns this new interference by Algeria in the internal affairs of Mali”. Faithful to its sovereignist dogma, Bamako maintains that the strategic options it determines are exclusively at its discretion.
