“Meeting party leaders gives us the opportunity to share the steps the government has taken in recent days,” Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told reporters.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed to AFP that this meeting would take place at 6:30 p.m. GMT.

Donald Trump, who is due to take office on January 20 at the White House, refused on Tuesday to rule out the use of force to annex this autonomous territory of Denmark.

He had already declared at the end of 2024 that control of Greenland was “an absolute necessity” for “national security and freedom around the world”.

Denmark is not in a “diplomatic crisis”, but that does not mean that “there could not be one (…) if words turn into actions”, said the minister.

“I think we have to take Trump very seriously, but not necessarily literally,” added the head of Danish diplomacy.

“We have no ambition to intensify a war of words with a president who will access the Oval Office,” said Mr. Løkke Rasmussen.

The Danish Prime Minister stressed on Monday that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” while affirming that the United States is “our closest allies”.

“Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland – and the development and future of Greenland are decided solely by its people,” the government of the Danish autonomous territory insisted on Wednesday in a statement.

Greenland, which seeks to gain sovereignty but remains financially dependent on Copenhagen, arouses desire for its natural resources – although oil prospecting and uranium exploitation are prohibited there – and for its geostrategic importance – the United States. United already having a military base there.
