C’is a short sequence of the visit of the German Foreign Minister to Syria which is causing a lot of noise. In the official video, we see Annalena Baerbock, in pants and a white blouse. At his side, his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot. They are introduced to Syria’s new strongman, Ahmed al-Shareh. He comes forward and extends his hand to Jean-Noël Barrot to greet him, then turns to the German minister and chooses another welcoming gesture, he briefly places his hand on her chest. Annalena Baerbock, who had been warned in advance, made the same gesture, visibly embarrassed. In some forms of Islam, a man never shakes hands with women who are not part of his family.

A few hours later, another gesture caused a lot of noise: the minister had barely left Syria when her image was blurred in the official photos of this meeting published on the social networks of the Islamist rebel group HTC. We can only see the outlines of the blurred silhouette of the minister whose face we are unable to recognize. The two interpreters, two women, were subjected to the same regime.

Damascus: Syria’s new ruler, the Islamist Ahmad Al-Sharaa, generally does not shake hands with women.
