The Vice-President of Ecuador Veronica Abad, in disagreement with President Daniel Noboa, announced on Saturday that she would assume the presidency of the country from Sunday, the start of the campaign for the general elections of February 9 in which her rival is candidate.
The Constitution provides for the president to take leave to campaign, but Daniel Noboa’s camp believes he does not have to do so since he was elected to complete the mandate of another, after having won early elections in 2023, and that it is not a re-election.

“A void within the executive”
The president appointed his Minister of Planning Sariha Moya as interim vice-president. In open conflict with Veronica Abad with whom he had won the 2023 elections, he sought to distance her from Quito.

The vice-president considered this appointment as an “insult” towards Ecuadorians and a “banishment” against her. She “did not show up in Ankara”, deplored Government Minister José de la Gasca on Thursday, referring to “serious facts […] which constitute an outrage”, and “a vacuum within the executive” justifying his replacement.
Daniel Noboa came to power in November 2023 to finish the 18-month term of his opposition predecessor Guillermo Lasso, who had called early elections to avoid his impeachment amid corruption accusations.
