Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has reappointed Planning Minister Sariha Moya as interim vice-president, as the conflict with incumbent Veronica Abad escalates, now accused of “contempt”.

Daniel Noboa and Veronica Abad, both entrepreneurs without much political experience, created a surprise by winning the early elections of 2023. Formerly allies, they are now in open conflict, with Veronica Abad saying she is the subject of “persecution”.

President Noboa issued a decree to appoint Sariha Moya “as constitutional vice president” until January 22 or until Veronica Abad presents herself at the Ecuadorian embassy in Turkey, the Government Minister announced on Thursday José de la Gasca.

“A void within the executive”

“To date”, Veronica Abad “has not presented herself in Ankara” to exercise the functions entrusted to her, declared the minister, citing “serious facts […] which constitute an outrage. “This has serious consequences, but above all it leaves a void within the executive which must be filled,” he added.

Daniel Noboa had appointed Veronica Abad as ambassador to Israel in December 2023, thus distancing her from Quito and current government affairs. Subsequently and through many twists and turns, she was relieved of her duties as ambassador and she was asked to go to Ankara to promote Ecuador’s economic relations with Turkey.

A decision that Veronica Abad considered an “insult” towards Ecuadorians and a “banishment” against them.

The country’s youngest leader

Daniel Noboa came to power in November 2023 to finish the 18-month term of his opposition predecessor Guillermo Lasso who had called early elections to avoid his impeachment amid corruption accusations.

He will be a candidate in the general elections in February. His government says the country’s youngest leader is not obliged to take leave to campaign, contrary to what the Constitution provides, as he was elected to complete the mandate of another.
