Negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip continue, but their conclusion remains uncertain. In Doha, where the main discussions are taking place, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Majid al-Ansari, clarified that “technical and procedural” negotiations were underway, while emphasizing the importance of international coordination.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Majid al-Ansari reiterated Qatar's commitment to exploring all avenues to reach an agreement. “Regarding the negotiations aimed at obtaining a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, they are still ongoing. As you know, technical and procedural negotiations are currently taking place here in Doha. In addition, other avenues are at work in different contexts in Cairo. As you know, coordination is permanent with our brothers in the Arab Republic of Egypt. There is a main track for negotiations, with different roles within that track,” he declared.
The conflict, triggered by the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has generated a major humanitarian crisis. As fighting continues, around 250 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip during the Hamas incursion. According to the latest estimates, around a hundred of them are still being held, and a third are believed to have died.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke “some progress” in the discussions, without however putting forward a timetable for the conclusion of a possible agreement.
Despite these efforts, the prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain, leaving civilian populations in a dramatic situation and negotiators facing a major diplomatic challenge.
