It seemed like a joke. Make Canada the “51st state” of the United States? Appoint Justin Trudeau, the current Canadian Prime Minister, “governor” of this new territory? Last week, on social networks, (re)elected President Donald Trump seemed to revel in this good joke.
In the meantime, however, the winner of the November elections has just added other threats of extension of the same type. Possession of Greenland is an “absolute necessity” for the United States, he explained, repeating an antiphon already used in 2019. Likewise, when he railed, this weekend, against the increase in tariffs which hit the ships using the Panama Canal, the solution was obvious in his eyes: it was a question of taking back the canal to immediately put an end to this “scam”.
