At the end of the year, a period often exploited by cybercriminals, the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCy) of Togo intensifies its awareness-raising efforts by involving local media. This initiative is part of the Agency's 2024-2028 strategy, focused on raising awareness and preventing cyberattacks.
According to the Director General of the ANCy, Commander Gbota Gwaliba, the media plays a key role in disseminating awareness messages. “Humans are the weakest link in IT security due to lack of information,” he said. The goal is twofold: to educate the media about digital threats so they can protect their own systems and to encourage them to raise awareness among the general public.
Recently identified malicious campaigns include fake promotions and fictitious games exploiting well-known brands, as well as fraudulent advertisements for charitable donations. To counter these ploys, the ANCy has organized training sessions for media professionals, addressing themes such as source protection, legal frameworks for cybersecurity and digital best practices.
Journalists were also alerted to the specific risks linked to their digital tools, often targeted by cybercriminals to spread false information or steal sensitive data. The festive period, marked by a general drop in vigilance, is particularly conducive to cyberattacks.
Through these actions, the ANCy hopes to establish a reinforced cybersecurity culture within the editorial staff and among the Togolese population, thus helping to reduce the risks linked to cyber scams.
