Southwest Japan was hit by an earthquake on Monday. Its strength was initially given as 6.9, but was later revised downwards to 6.6. Authorities temporarily issued a tsunami warning for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures and the island of Kyushu. There were initially no reports of damage. No problems were identified at nuclear facilities in the affected area.

In the coastal city of Kochi, residents were asked to leave their homes as a precautionary measure. Broadcaster NHK reported that a tsunami with waves of up to about one meter reached land within 30 minutes of the quake. A wave measuring 20 centimeters high was measured in Miyazaki Harbor. In Kyushu, a man sustained minor injuries after falling down a flight of stairs, NHK TV reported. At Miyazaki Station, trains were canceled and passengers were stranded.
