On a loan of €118 million for the development of the hydraulic sector in Benin, the African Development Bank is contributing €75.63 million.

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group granted on December 17, 2024, in Abidjan, a loan of 118.63 million euros to Benin for the implementation of the drinking water security program for resilience in rural areas. The aim is to provide drinking water to an additional 965,000 people in the West African country.

The African Development Bank is contributing 75.63 million euros to this financial support, Africa Growing Together Fund (AGTF), a co-financing fund created by the African Development Bank and the People’s Bank of China, is providing an envelope of 43 million euros.

“This project is the Bank’s second intervention in rural Benin in the drinking water sector. The first having been completed in 2012. Through this operation, the Bank Group reaffirms its commitment to supporting the government of Benin in the implementation of its 2021-2026 Government Action Plan and in particular to contribute to access universal access to drinking water for rural populations », indicated Robert Masumbuko, country manager of the African Development Bank in Benin.

The project includes the construction of 130 high-volume boreholes and pumping stations for a cumulative flow of 3,100 cubic meters per hour; the construction of 1,440 standpipes and 40 water towers with a cumulative volume of 14,650 cubic meters, the supply and installation of 2,200 kilometers of networks (discharge and distribution) and 2,000 kilometers of pipes for connection of 20,000 households.

In addition to this establishment of hydraulic infrastructure, the project will provide support for reforms in the water sector and the establishment of drinking water consumer associations. It will also contribute to building the capacity of stakeholders in this project which should benefit the rural populations of ten departments of Benin out of a total of 11 departments in the country.
