It was a straight-to-the-point Olaf Scholz who appeared this Monday, December 16 before the Bundestag. From his first words, he sets the tone: “My goal is to bring forward the legislative elections,” he explains, recalling the exceptional nature of the question of confidence, asked only five times before him in the history of the Republic. In two of these cases, it was for his predecessors to ensure the renewed support of the Bundestag. In the other three, the goal was to be able to dissolve parliament to call new elections.

After three hours of tense and sometimes bitter debate, Olaf Scholz therefore “lost” the confidence of the Bundestag, in accordance with his wishes. With the exception of members of his social democratic party (SPD), all political parties voted against him or abstained. The ball is now in the court of the President of the Republic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who should announce new elections for February 23.
