Towards zero tolerance for drunk driving? This is a measure long desired by the Vias Institute. In the north of the country, the parties would be more in favor. On the Walloon side, Georges-Louis Bouchez would be ready to discuss, unlike the Engagés, who do not want to punish reasonable people.
After the publication of a new study on the rate of accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol, the Vias Institute calls for zero tolerance regarding drunk driving. This measure must be discussed by the Arizona federal coalition, but it is quite divided on the issue. In the north of the country, the idea is rather well received, while in the south, it is more complicated. Georges-Louis Bouchez says he is open to this proposal, unlike the Engagés.
Could the Horeca sector be impacted?
As of now, there is no federal government, so this decision probably won’t be made right away. But what impact could this have on the Horeca sector? According to the Horeca Wallonia Federation, there are no data or studies that have assessed the consequences of zero tolerance in terms of drunk driving for this sector.
The sector does not seem particularly worried. He is first waiting to see what the next government decides. In addition, he emphasizes that behaviors have already changed thanks to awareness campaigns on the dangers of alcohol and increased controls.
Finally, the new generation is more sensitive to prevention messages and more open to alternatives to alcoholic beverages. Moreover, the Horeca sector has adapted by offering mocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails, as well as menus accompanied by non-alcoholic drinks.
