“Several of its grievances remained unanswered”… the European Union is taking the United Kingdom to court, accused of not having respected a free movement agreement

This announcement comes as relations between London and Brussels finally calmed down after Labor leader Keir Starmer came to power.

“Several of his grievances remained unanswered”…When leaving the European Union in 2020, the United Kingdom committed to respecting European Union law on the free movement of EU citizens and their family members at the end of the year 2020″. A promise which, according to Brussels, which decided to refer the matter to European justice, has not been kept.

Of “potential obstacles” to the free movement of European citizens

The European Commission announced this Monday, December 16, that it would take legal action against the United Kingdom for “potential” obstacles to the free movement of citizens of the European Union, at the end of 2020, after Brexit. According to the high European institution, the United Kingdom has not respected “EU law on the free movement of EU citizens and their family members at the end of 2020”it is indicated in a press release, made public this Monday.

An announcement which adds water to the gas, while relations between London and Brussels, whose dialogue was until then difficult, tended to improve since Keir Starmer came to power in July 2024.

Exchanges “difficult” with London since 2020

The United Kingdom officially left the EU on January 31, 2020. Under an agreement, EU citizens and their family members who settled in Britain before the end of 2020 were to have the same rights as they had before Brexit .

Since then, the European Commission has had several discussions “difficult” with the British authorities and reported “several grievances remained unanswered, particularly with regard to workers’ rights and the rights of extended family members.”
