Georgia: twelve dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning

Twelve people were found dead, apparently of carbon monoxide poisoning, in the sleeping area attached to a Georgia ski resort restaurant, police said.

“Preliminary examinations do not reveal any traces of violence on the bodies” of the victims, eleven of whom are of foreign nationality and one of Georgian nationality, who were found “in the sleeping area on the second floor of an Indian restaurant in Gudauri », a station in the north of the country, indicates the same source.

The macabre discovery took place on Saturday.

A photo of the establishment at the foot of the mountains shows it to be a three-story restaurant, with an upper section likely dedicated to staff accommodation.

According to the first elements of the investigation, a generator had “been placed inside” the building, “near the rooms”, indicate the Georgian authorities.

“This oil generator would have been launched after the building was deprived of electricity” on Friday, according to the same source.

An investigation was opened and forensic examinations were ordered to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

This drama has no apparent link with the tensions in this Caucasian country since the party which leads it, Georgian Dream, claimed victory in the legislative elections of October 26 – described as rigged by the opposition – and the government decided to end November to suspend all EU accession negotiations until 2028.
