The elected Democrat from California underwent “successful” hip surgery to install a prosthesis and is “well on the road to recovery,” said her spokesperson, Ian Krager, in a press release.
Nancy Pelosi “appreciates the enormous outpouring of prayers and well wishes” and “is still committed to ensuring access to quality health care for all Americans,” he added.
The former speaker of the House of Representatives, aged 84, was injured and was hospitalized in Luxembourg, according to a press release from her office on Friday.
The elected official was in the Grand Duchy with a parliamentary delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western Front during the Second World War.
According to several American media, she fell down marble stairs and fractured her hip.
The only woman to have been president of the House of Representatives, she lost this position when the Republicans regained the majority in this chamber during the mid-term elections in November 2022.
However, she retains great influence over the Democratic Party and her behind-the-scenes maneuvers at the end of July were partly responsible for Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
