Syrian rebels, who recently seized power in Damascus, have received drones as well as support from Ukrainian intelligence agents, the Washington Post Wednesday morning. According to the media outlet, which cites sources knowledgeable about Ukrainian military activity abroad, the aim of such aid was to destabilize Russia and its Syrian allies.

According to the sources, Ukrainian intelligence sent drone operators and around 150 flying machines to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels in Idlib about a month ago. These same sources say that Ukrainian support, however, played a modest role in the fall of the former Syrian president.

Ukrainian help in bringing down the Assad regime was an open secret in the intelligence community, these sources said, but senior U.S. government officials claim they knew nothing about it.

Separately, the Biden administration is examining the possibility of removing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of terrorist organizations, outgoing US government officials said in NBC News. The aim of this move is to “create an opening to interact with the new government in Syria,” said a former senior US official.
