ANALYSE – Despite their imperative for strategic autonomy, Europeans are struggling to agree on the means necessary for a true common industrial defense policy.
Mistral anti-missile defense systems, modern armored vehicles, artillery ammunition… The announcement did not cause much noise, but the first funding from the European Union for five joint acquisition projects of military equipment by 20 Member States, for a total of 300 million euros, made official in mid-November, represent a small step in the fledgling defense Europe. This is one of the realizations of the common response to the war waged by Russia in Ukraine for more than two and a half years.
The election of Donald Trump, who called into question American commitment to NATO, gives a boost to the imperative to accelerate the strategic autonomy of the Old Continent. Along with industrial competitiveness, defense will be one of the priorities of the second term of Ursula von der Leyen, whose new Commission was approved by the European Parliament on Wednesday in Strasbourg.
