Why are so many people giving up alcohol? Our consumption of alcoholic beverages has decreased in 40 years. Why? Le Point J has collected the testimonies of those who have given up (or almost) alcohol and discusses them with Célestine Perissinotto, project manager at the Groupement romand d’études des addictions (GREA).
“There is a downward trend in alcohol consumption among young people aged 15 to 35, but it is not a linear decline. Consumption has been on a roller coaster ride for about twenty years,” notes the specialist. And the phenomenon is found elsewhere, in England or Canada for example.
Among Gen Z, it’s college students who tend to gravitate toward low- or no-alcohol drinks, for health reasons in particular. But many point to the social challenges this presents. “You have to justify yourself all the time,” says one listener in this episode.
Young people have found other ways to connect
“It’s a change in society, in the way we drink and celebrate. Today, young people have found other ways to connect, analyses Célestine Perissinotto. They are also more aware of the risks.”
What preventive measures work? What are other reasons to stop drinking alcohol?
