As throughout the campaign for the European elections, he posed as a bulwark and heir to the fight against fascism and its “culture of hate”. He asked the French to be worthy of those who had landed “in the face of the questioning of everything they had fought for”. The reference to the rise of the National Rally in the polls was clear. “When amnesia lurks, when consciences fall asleep”, it is the momentum of the Liberation fighters that was to carry the French of today.
