France: Far Right Leads First Round of Early Legislative Elections

In France, the far-right party, the National Rally (RN) led by Jordan Bardella came first, Sunday, at the end of the first round of the legislative snap elections with 33% of the votes, according to estimates from research institutes. poll when polls close at 8:00 p.m.

The RN and its allies from the Republican right are followed by the left-wing alliance The New Popular Front with 28.50 and the presidential coalition under the banner of Ensemble, credited with 22 of the votes, according to the same estimates relayed by the media in France.

This first round recorded a historic turnout of around 70%, compared to 47.5% in the first round of the 2022 election, according to estimates from polling institutes relayed by the media.

Some 49.5 million French people were called to the polls for the first round of this election organized following the dissolution, on June 9, of the National Assembly by President Emmanuel Macron after the victory of the extreme right in the European elections.

The 2nd round of these elections by direct universal suffrage will take place on July 7 to provide the National Assembly with 577 deputies who will sit there for the next five years.
