The young man had already narrowly escaped a shark attack four years ago.
Jade Kahukore-Dixon, 24 ans, lost his life, victim of a shark attackTuesday, off the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, reports the New Zealand Herald. A local police spokesperson confirmed the information to Stuff. “Emergency services were called around midday following reports of a man seriously injured after diving from a boat“, he said. The young man, a professional diver, died of his injuries in hospital.
Little information on the circumstances of the tragedy is known, other than the involvement of a great white shark. Jade, whom her father Jacky describes as “a very solid young guy”, loved fishing, diving and often crossed paths with sharks. But he “wasn't afraid of it“since‘“he thought he was one with the ocean.”
“He would come out of the maul by himself and run.”
When he spotted one, Jade held his breath and hid behind rocks, explains his father. The young man had also came close to death four years ago. “His friend was timing him (and finding it slow). He jumped in, swam to the bottom and Jade's foot was stuck under a rock. He couldn't get out and his friend freed his foot and he saved his life.”
In addition to being an experienced diver, Jade Kahukore-Dixon was a promising rugby player. In 2018, he had been rated as one of the most outstanding young players in the Chatham Islands rugby team who had played against various New Zealand South Island clubs on tour. “When he was playing rugby when he was young, everyone was shouting 'Help Jade, someone help Jade' because he was in the middle of a maul fighting for the ball and he was taking it out of the maul by himself and ran”, remembers his father.
