The rainy season in Côte d’Ivoire poses significant environmental challenges, particularly in terms of sanitation and rainwater management.

The intensity of the rains in recent years increases the risk of flooding, causing considerable material damage and, unfortunately, annual deaths in Abidjan.

Through a leasing contract with the Ivorian State, the Ivory Coast Water Distribution Company (SODECI) manages the collection, transport, treatment of wastewater and evacuation of rainwater via networks underground.

In anticipation of the rainy season, SODECI is conducting awareness campaigns to promote responsible sanitation practices among populations.

The objective of this initiative is to reduce the risks of flooding and diseases linked to poor management of waste and rainwater, by encouraging the population to adopt ecological behaviors.

Actions include cleaning campaigns aimed at purifying urban drainage systems, regular inspections, and repairs of damaged sanitation works, supervised by a remote monitoring system.

In addition to these measures, educational teams inform citizens of the importance of not throwing solid waste into the streets or gutters and encourage the maintenance of sanitation infrastructure.

These efforts aim to reduce maintenance costs and service interruptions, while promoting a cleaner environment.

This is a crucial campaign combining education, prevention and community engagement, highlighting the importance of citizen involvement in waste management.

SODECI also carries out preventive maintenance each year before the rainy season, illustrating its key role in the sustainable development of Côte d’Ivoire.

Since the start of the rainy season this year, at least ten deaths have been reported, mainly in the Autonomous District of Abidjan, due to heavy rainfall and flooding in several neighborhoods.
