Baby and Penny live in a splendid villa in Tuscany. They were collected by their uncle Wilhem and their aunt Katchen. The little girls are considered strangely by their classmates, not only because they are orphans and have English names, but also because a driver, Cosimo, takes them to school in a large DeSoto, “a car all in velor inside”, the only automobile in the area.

It’s the 1940s and Mussolini is still in power. Penny, the eldest, is the narrator of this astonishing novel, showing fascist Italy through the eyes of two children. “Me, I wonder if I can love my sister Baby more than the Duce. But I love Baby like Jesus. Really like Jesus, and I love Jesus a little more than God, and God like Mussolini, and Italy and the Fatherland less than God, but more than my yellow bear.”
