Why you should be careful when going to the beach with your dog

Going for long walks on the beach with your dog in summer is one of the little pleasures, both for us and for him. We also generally take it when we want to bask in the sun, whether in Belgium or in another country. Provided that dogs are allowed on the beach of course, this is generally noted on a sign.

Here’s what to watch out for if you go to the beach with your dog

When we take our dog to the beach, he usually takes the opportunity to roll around in the sand, dig and run everywhere. In short, he’s having fun. However, you must be careful of one thing: that he does not ingest too much sand.

By doing all these activities, he risks swallowing it without realizing it, which can obviously be harmful to him. As Marie France magazine explains, this can even cause a serious gastric problem, called sand impaction. The colon is blocked, a blockage is created in the stomach and the intestines are compressed, which inevitably causes unbearable pain for the dog.

To avoid this, don’t let it out of your sight. Do not give him food on the ground, and make sure he does not drink sea water. It is better not to let him dig either and remember to wash his toys properly when you come home.

These few symptoms should alert you: vomiting, loss of appetite, if he seems to have abdominal pain, tremors or is not having a bowel movement. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
