“I really don’t care what Tucker Carlson thinks. They are trying to intimidate us. That’s not how these elections work. President Trump won decisively, and he deserves to have someone with real experience who can pass his agenda. » Under cover of anonymity, a Republican senator made this confidence to the PunchBowl News news site while speaking about the fight to replace Mitch McConnell as leader of the Republicans in the Senate.
Tucker Carlson and several other prominent figures in the MAGA movement, including Elon Musk and Charlie Kirk, have endorsed Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott (photo). The PunchBowl News confidant and several other equally discreet senators prefer John Cornyn (Texas) and John Thune (South Dakota), numbers two and three in the current Republican hierarchy in the Senate.
Cornyn and Thune, much closer to McConnell than Scott, notably played a key role in passing the massive tax cuts of Trump’s first term. The latter has not yet commented on this race which will end at the beginning of next year by a secret vote. But he has already put pressure on running candidates by demanding that the next Senate majority leader commit to bending the Senate’s usual rules to allow emergency appointments. Under the normal procedure, the opposition can question nominees for various government positions, raise questions about their qualifications and delay their confirmations.
Trump’s request obviously calls into question the independence of Congress. Independence that would likely be further threatened if Scott ends up replacing McConnell.
