German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday. Both said they were “ready to work together for the return of peace to Europe,” announced the German government.
“Both exchanged views on relations between Germany and the United States and current geopolitical problems,” said the chancellor’s spokesperson, Steffen Hebestreit. “They also said they were ready to work together for a return to peace in Europe,” he added.
Shortly before, during a television program on the German channel ARD, the German chancellor confided that his principle is to “dance with those who are in the room, and this also applies to the next president of the USA”.
“I am never naive”
“I’m never naive, but I’m also a little imperturbable,” he also said.
During his first term as President of the United States, Donald Trump criticized Germany for its military spending, considered too low, its trade surplus and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline with Russia.
Mr. Scholz stressed that Germany now spends 2% of its GDP on its defense budget, in line with NATO requirements.
The German Chancellor also declared during this broadcast that he expects the next American President Trump to stick to the commitment made by the administration of Democrat Joe Biden to have American intermediate-range missiles stationed in Germany .
