War in Ukraine: will the peace summit lead to a common position for the outcome of the conflict

Leaders hope for consensus to advance a peace process between Russia and Ukraine.

The final communiqué of the Ukraine peace summit organized in Switzerland is considered satisfactory by Kyiv, its Foreign Minister said on Sunday. The text to be adopted after two days of discussion in Bürgenstock, near Lucerne, is “balance“, estimated Dmitro Kouleba.

The Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who participated in the discussions, indicated for his part that the wording of the final communiqué did not suit all participants and that it should not be adopted unanimously. The hundred countries and organizations that participated in the summit intended to consolidate Ukraine’s diplomatic positionin the absence of Russia and its great ally China, did not discuss any peace proposals other than those formulated by Kyiv, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy told journalists at Bürgenstock.

Dmitro Kouleba was referring in particular to the alternative peace plan proposed by Beijing and to the Russian president’s proposal Vladimir Poutine to cease hostilities if Ukraine renounces all the territories claimed by Moscow as well as future membership in NATO. Kyiv, on the contrary, insists on recovering all the territories occupied by Russia since 2014, including the Crimean peninsula..

The Austrian chancellor said it was too early to say whether the Bürgenstock summit could lead to peace negotiations including Russia, but said he hoped a follow-up conference would be organized.
