Jean-Noël Barrot warns Elon Musk after Trump's election: “Democracy is fragile”

The head of French diplomacy recalled on Saturday that democracy was « fragile »hoping that Elon Musk, announced in the team of future American president Donald Trump, does not put it after special interests.

Asked on the daily website The Parisian on Musk's role in the future, Jean-Noël Barrot responded: “let's hope he doesn't inflict on American democracy the treatment he gave Twitter. Democracy is a fragile treasure”.

Elon Musk is expected to join Donald Trump's future government, but the precise contours of his role have not been revealed. The richest man in the world took part in the telephone conversation on Wednesday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump after the latter's victory in the American presidential election, according to the Ukrainian presidency.

“Let’s not suffer the fate of American Democrats”

“We will never accept that public debate is relocated to deregulated social networks in the hands of particular interests, whether American or Chinese”insisted the French Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Elon Musk bought Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion. As soon as the acquisition was concluded, the boss of Tesla fired the management team, took the company off the stock market and fired a very large number of employees.

“Let us not suffer the fate of American Democrats. Let's return to the sources of democracy: power and responsibility to citizens”declared the French minister again.

Jean-Noël Barrot also predicted that the next American president, contrary to some of his comments, would not let go of Ukraine. “Donald Trump is too wise to agree to endorse what would be the largest territorial annexation in history in 75 years. Too wise to forget that no just and lasting peace can be concluded behind the backs of the Ukrainians and over the heads of the Europeans”he declared. “This would enshrine the law of the strongest, with very serious consequences in Europe and other regions of the world. »
