One month before its reopening scheduled for December 7, Notre-Dame de Paris must still go through some work planned for the year 2025. This will not prevent tourists and faithful from accessing the ceremony, reports France Info.
The cathedral bells rang out in the capital on Friday November 8. It has been since April 15, 2019, the date of the fire at Notre-Dame de Paris, that they have not rung, reports France Info. A harbinger of its reopening, the cathedral should see its doors reopen on December 7. But then, where is the work on the most famous church in Paris?
Reconstructed identically, the Viollet-le-Duc spire is almost complete. Some work still remains to be done, such as the lead covering of the base of the spire and the reinstallation of the statues of the apostles and saints. Objective planned for the year 2025.
The reborn cathedral
At the heart of the building, the layout has been somewhat modified. In fact, part of the liturgical furniture was removed to give a more minimalist impression and leave more room for light. The stained glass windows, which escaped the flames, have been restored, as have the “mays”these altar paintings from the 17th century. According to those responsible for the restoration, who mobilized no less than 250 companies and hundreds of craftsmen, a million additional visitors could come to observe the building.
Although the work is progressing well, cranes and scaffolding are still visible to visitors. Concerning the reopening ceremony, Emmanuel Macron will give a speech and the restored Notre-Dame organ will be revived for the occasion. The first mass will take place the next day, December 8, and will be celebrated by Mgr Laurent Ulrich, Archbishop of Paris.
