“Your body, my choice. » TikTok, Instagram, X… All over social networks, under women's publications, this terrifying sentence is spread. Many of them denounce a resurgence of sexism since the re-election of Donald Trump, who campaigned in particular by relying on masculinist speeches.
The expression “your body, my choice” is a distortion of the feminist slogan “my body, my choice”, which appeared in the 1960s to reaffirm the right of women to control their bodies. Donald Trump, by appointing three very conservative judges to the Supreme Court, unraveled women's right to abortion in the United States during his first term.
“Hey bitches”
And it seems that many masculinist influencers are rubbing their hands with it. After the announcement of his victory, far-right commentator and former YouTuber Nick Fuentes welcomed the sadness of two Democratic women. In a video published on X, we see him gloating and saying “Hey bitches, we control your bodies! […] It’s your body, my choice.”
“There will NEVER be a woman president, ever!” […] We will always put you down. You will never control your own bodies,” he smiles in this video liked more than 16,000 times. Everywhere on the networks, women are denouncing a liberation of misogynistic speech. Some report having to endure the chants of “your body, our choice” from the boys they go to class with, others pin comments such as “we now control your bodies” under their videos.
President convicted of sexual assault
The deaths of women who have been refused care related to pregnancy or miscarriage are increasing across the Atlantic, due to the ban on abortion. Despite these tragedies, the return of Donald Trump frees misogynistic speech. “Men no longer have to hide their hatred of women. They can hate us openly and lose nothing,” laments Hannah Cor, a TikTok influencer followed by more than 30,000 subscribers.
This emerging phenomenon risks finding new momentum with the return of Donald Trump to the Oval Office. The Republican has never held back from insulting the women he has encountered, from his political opponents to journalists. Convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a fitting room in 1996, the Republican is known for saying that you should “grab women by the pussy.” It is therefore difficult to imagine a decline in sexist discourse after his return to the White House.
