The bodies of 11 people, including two women and two minors, were found in a van abandoned on a road towards Acapulco, local authorities announced Thursday.

The bodies were discovered Wednesday evening on a road towards the seaside resort of Acapulco (south), just outside Chilpancingo, the Guerrero state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

A murder investigation was also opened after the beheading of Chilpancingo's mayor last month, less than a week after he took office

Last week, the prosecution indicated that it was investigating the disappearance in the same area of 17 people, including five minors. He did not specify whether the two cases are linked.

Five members of the same family were killed last week in Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero where criminal gangs are vying for control of drug trafficking and routes.

Since the controversial launch of the war against drug trafficking in 2006, Mexico has recorded more than 450,000 homicides and 100,000 disappearances, according to official figures.
