“Four years ago, we worked together to bring more prosperity, more stability in a very complex world, and we know that for four years, the world has become even more difficult and more complex,” declared the first minister before heading to his caucus meeting.
“As a government, we have been preparing for this possibility for a long time, and we are ready,” said Mr. Trudeau.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and several cabinet ministers took the floor to reiterate that the government has been preparing for months for the possible return of Mr. Trump.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre also congratulated Donald Trump. His mission, he indicated on the social network X, is to “save our jobs”.
“Yesterday’s results confirm that we must cancel Trudeau’s plan to quadruple the carbon tax and increase other taxes, which would push hundreds of thousands of additional jobs south, where President Trump will reduce taxes even more,” wrote Mr. Poilievre.
Yves-François Blanchet made his “optimistic congratulations” known.
“The president-elect of the United States was able to read the hearts of many citizens and offer them the words that will rally them. Let us now know how to collaborate as neighbors and friends designated by history, in particular on the issues of migration, trade, climate and security,” declared the leader of the Bloc Québécois.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh had yet to issue a statement as of this writing, around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Donald Trump will take office in January.
