“I felt nothing at the news of my brother’s death; neither sadness, nor despair, nor joy, nor pleasure.” Thus opens The Collapse. The half-brother of the writer Edouard Louis was found on the floor of his kitchen, “like an animal in agony, like a beast”, his body collapsed, worn out. He was only 38 years old. “I received the news as one would receive information about the weather outside, or as one would listen to a random person telling us the story of their afternoon at the supermarket.”

Announced for April 2024, The Collapse was delayed for several months. Another novel slipped, before it, into the publication programs of Le Seuil, a story also tragic but full of joy, dedicated to the flight of the writer’s mother, regaining her freedom by emancipating herself from a man violent. It was jubilant and moving Monique escapesdiscovered this spring. The story of the life and death of the elder brother had to bide its time and mature.
