October 20, 2024, is a day of jubilation in Oakland: Kamala Harris celebrates her 60th birthday. The atmosphere is light in the Home of Chicken & Waffles restaurant. Harris-Walz signs abound, we eat and toast to the health of the Democratic candidate. The owner of the place is all smiles and has nothing but complimentary words for her. The adjectives that come to mind to describe her? “Strength, intelligence, tenacity. Terms that characterize all the people here,” says Derreck Johnson.
