The search continues to try to rescue those still missing in southeastern Spain. The number of deaths currently stands at 158, making these floods caused by a cold drop phenomenon – DANA, according to the Spanish acronym – the country’s most serious natural disaster in half a century. The water has receded but the sadness, anger and despair of residents are beginning to fill the streets of the province of Valencia and the region of Castile-La Mancha.
The Spanish press is, like one man, stunned by the nightmarish situation in which an entire part of the country is plunged. So much so that “adjectives end up losing their meaning when they have to describe a tragedy of the magnitude that devastated Valencia,” writes the local media The Provinces. A disaster whose final toll is not yet known, and which continues to grow. For the moment, the priority is actions rather than words. It is immediately necessary to rescue those who can still be rescued and to provide aid to the many who lost everything in the disaster, believes the media The reason: “There will undoubtedly be grandiose declarations of solidarity – the sincerity of which no one doubts – accompanied by promises of support and aid of all kinds. The most urgent thing is to give ourselves the means to avoid more victims and then to quickly help those most affected.”
