The Belgian city of Ghent is among the ten best cities in the world in terms of quality of life, according to the Global Cities Index, a study conducted by Oxford Economics.
This recognition is based on various socio-economic indicators which assess the well-being and satisfaction of residents.
Quality of life indicators
The quality of life ranking takes into account several essential factors:
- Life expectancy
- Income per person
- Income equality
- Housing expenses
- Leisure and cultural sites
- Internet speed
The Global Cities Index ranks the world’s 1,000 largest cities according to five categories: economy, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance.
The cities at the top of this ranking stand out for their economic contributions, their innovation in education and business, as well as their investments in infrastructure to maintain a high quality of life.
The cities at the top of the 2024 ranking
New York and London dominate the 2024 rankings, thanks to their performances in the economy and human capital categories.
These cities are global centers for finance, business and education, with a multitude of universities and corporate headquarters. San José, Tokyo and Paris complete the top 5, each having economic assets and quality infrastructure.
Ghent and other Belgian cities
Although Ghent particularly stands out for its quality of life, it ranks 98th overall in the Global Cities Index.
Brussels, the Belgian capital, occupies 45th place, followed by Antwerp (94th), Liège (194th) and Charleroi (332nd). Brussels stands out for its overall performance, while Ghent is recognized for its exceptional living conditions.
