The Spanish Prime Minister said on Thursday that he had discussed with his Lebanese counterpart Madrid’s decision to recognize Palestine as a state.

“I have just had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, with whom I discussed the announcement of the recognition of the State of Palestine by Spain on May 28,” wrote Pedro Sanchez on X.

And added: “We want this recognition to contribute to building a future of peace, stability and prosperity in all the countries of the region.”

Sanchez reiterated Spain’s commitment to the security and stability of Lebanon and highlighted the work carried out by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Spain, along with Norway and Ireland, announced on Wednesday that they would recognize Palestine as a state from May 28.

These announcements come as Israel continues its deadly offensive against the Gaza Strip, despite a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Palestine is already recognized by eight European countries: Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Sweden and the Greek Cypriot administration.

More than 35,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, the vast majority women and children, and nearly 80,000 others have been injured since October following a Hamas attack.

More than seven months after the start of the Israeli war, large swaths of the Gaza Strip lie in ruins, victims of a paralyzing blockade that deprives them of food, drinking water and medicine.

Israel is being prosecuted before the International Court of Justice for the “crime of genocide”. The Court ordered Tel Aviv to ensure that its forces do not commit acts of a genocidal nature and to take measures to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.
