As in Benin and Ivory Coast, subscribers of mobile telephone services in Togo can experience free roaming in Ghana since October 9. The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana have implemented the agreement signed on 1is November 2023, therefore making free roaming effective for travelers roaming in both countries.

(Cio mag) – Togo and Ghana are concretizing their desire to make electronic communications a development tool. The regulatory authorities of the two countries have implemented the implementation of free roaming, in the dynamic of digital inclusion in the ECOWAS region. This reach was reflected in the implementation of the same protocol between Ghana and Benin, during the same occasion.

For Togolese travelers holding SIM cards from Togo operators, call reception is now free for 30 consecutive days of their trip. Before this agreement, you had to pay 240/min. Call emissions drop from 550F/min to around 8.67F/min at maximum. Staying connected will also be possible with MB billed at only 1.6F compared to 8400 per MB previously.

This ease of communicating across national borders, both for Togolese and Ghanaians, is an opportunity to boost socio-economic development through electronic communications.

Sub-regional integration tool

During the implementation of the agreement, in the presence of the Ghanaian Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, Hon. Charles Acheampong; Michel Galley, Director General of ARCEP Togo, expressed his satisfaction with the commitment of regulators in Ghana but also in Benin for the benefit of consumers in the three countries. ARCEP Togo particularly supports bilateral agreements with the aim of getting all ECOWAS countries to implement regional free roaming. Opportunity for the CEO of ARCEP Togo to also appreciate the effort of telecom operators who support this dynamic.

For his part, the Ghanaian Deputy Minister of Communications called on the NCA to define clear measures to evaluate the success of the implementation of this agreement. “Only by measuring our progress can we ensure that we keep the promises made to our citizens and achieve the expected results”said Hon. Acheampong. Dr Hervé Coovi Guedegbe, Executive Secretary of ARCEP Benin, went in the same direction by declaring that free roaming between the three countries “marks a crucial step in regional integration within ECOWAS. He reiterated that this launch constitutes a decisive step towards a more united, connected and prosperous West Africa. »

In Lomé in December 2023, ARCEP Togo brought together Benin and Mali around the same table for the implementation of free roaming.
