Two brothers died in an accidental fire in an apartment in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges on Saturday evening, we learned on Sunday from firefighters and the public prosecutor’s office.
The fire, which according to firefighters broke out around 7:30 p.m. on the third floor of a building which has four floors, left two victims, aged 59 and 49.
The fire started from a fryer in the kitchen of the apartment, social housing which was not the subject of concerns, Epinal prosecutor Frédéric Nahon told AFP.
One of the two men died of asphyxiation before help arrived, the other died after being taken care of by firefighters, he said. The causes of his death, asphyxiation or heart attack, remain to be determined.
Two other people, a 41-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke, firefighters said. A firefighter was also slightly injured.
The disaster led to the evacuation of 19 people.
