“We must increase security to protect Belgian heritage”

“I would increase security in Belgium and in large cities in general, explains Anthony Morris. We have an exceptional heritage in our country, whether from a cultural, social or even gastronomic point of view. But people don’t take advantage of it enough, among other things, because of this feeling of insecurity in big cities. I have the impression that many people sometimes prefer to stay at home rather than go and enjoy what the big cities have to offer.”

The 33-year-old is originally from the province of Luxembourg but currently lives not far from Liège. A city in which he likes to go for walks on his days off with his wife and two young children. “But I quickly feel this feeling of insecurity in the center, for example at Place Saint-Lambert, even more so when I am accompanied by my children. I am saddened to hear that a woman like Aurore Morisse (Editor’s note: face of the television show ‘Affaire concluded’) plans to move from the center because of damage in front of its art gallery. I think we should strengthen the police force in big cities while trying to punish the perpetrators of incivility more severely.”

Although he is a Belgian resident and therefore votes in Belgium, Anthony Moris also has Luxembourg nationality allowing him to play for the Luxembourg national team. There, the former Standard goalkeeper feels a different atmosphere. “I have the impression that they respect their heritage more, concludes the man who would never see himself entering politics after his career. People are very honest there and defend this heritage much more. It is also a question of education with basic values which, when lost, lead to violence which has no place in our society.”
