Will resign, will not resign: political suspense has gripped Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that he is considering his future as head of government after accusations of corruption linked to his wife Begoña Gomez.

The Spanish are divided on the question.

“No, this one will not resign. He will stay there forever. I tell you.”says a disillusioned Spaniard.

“It was surprising in form. Then, like everything in life, no one is indispensable. And logically, what we must always seek is the good of the citizens and the good of the people”estimates another.

The investigation follows a complaint filed by an organization close to the far right, which admitted to having only based itself on press articles.

Jose Manuel Albares, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, denounces political manipulation: “Slander, lies, hoaxes. What is ultimately nothing more than political and media harassment, especially when it is directed against our families, only degrades democracy.”

Present in Madrid on Friday, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell also spoke on the issue.

“It is necessary to separate questions of political debate, ideas, proposals, from questions that involve personal attacks. I understand very well the feelings of the President of the Government.”

Pedro Sánchez is expected to announce in a few days whether or not he is resigning as Prime Minister.

A decision scrutinized throughout the EU, six weeks before the European elections.
