The Gaza Civil Defense said at least five people were killed Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike on a school converted into a shelter in Gaza City. The Israeli military accused Hamas of using the building to “plan terrorist actions.”

“Five martyrs and a number of wounded were found after the occupier targeted with a missile the Ibn al-Haytham school, in the district of Shujaiya, in the east of the city,” the Civil Defense said in a statement.

For its part, the Israeli army said it had “carried out a precise strike on Hamas terrorists operating in a command and control center located inside a complex that previously served as a school.”

Accusations denied

Hamas fighters were using the school “to plan and carry out terrorist activities against the Israeli army and the State of Israel,” she added. The army has targeted several schools that it has turned into shelters in recent months, accusing Hamas of using them to hide fighters among the civilian population, something the Palestinian movement denies.

The vast majority of the Gaza Strip’s 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once by the war, sparked by Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, and many have sought shelter in school buildings.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians killed on October 7, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli data and including hostages who died or were killed in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Of the 251 people taken hostage on October 7, 97 are still being held in Gaza, including 33 who have been declared dead by the Israeli army.

At least 41,272 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in the Gaza Strip, the majority of them civilians, according to data from the Hamas government’s Health Ministry for Gaza, deemed reliable by the UN.
