The beeper explosions were caused by Israel, U.S. officials told The New York Times on condition of anonymity. The devices were allegedly tampered with by Israeli agents before they arrived in Lebanon.

CNN, for its part, reports a joint operation carried out by the Israeli army and the intelligence services of the Hebrew state, the Mossad.

According to sources cited by the New York Times, each pager was rigged with a small explosive charge of 30 to 50 grams placed at the battery level. A trigger had also been installed so that the devices would explode in a coordinated manner, upon receipt of a message appearing to come from Hezbollah leadership.
