African women's volleyball legend Janet Wanja dies at 40

African is in mourning following the announcement of the death of Janet Wanja, the legendary player and coach of the Malkia Strikers. She died on Thursday December 26, 2024 at 10 p.m., at the age of 40.

Janet Wanja has played a vital role in Kenyan and African volleyball. With a gold medal at the 2019 African Games, she also won the title of best African passer in 2007. She was also named as coach of the Kenya team for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Janet Wanja died after a long battle with gallbladder cancer, according to sources close to the family. This morning, the Kenya Volleyball Federation announced his death in a statement, expressing gratitude for his remarkable contribution to the development of volleyball in Africa.

“Janet Wanja was a Kenyan and African volleyball legend. She left an indelible mark on the sport and we are deeply saddened by her passing,” said Nyaberi, President of the Kenya Volleyball Federation.

The end of her professional career having been announced, Janet was promoted to coach of the Malkia Strikers team. The expertise and leadership she demonstrated played an integral role in leading the team to the Paris Olympics and the Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
